Book Group Carterton
The Carterton Book Group meets on the fourth Friday of the month at The Village Hall, Rosevilla Drive, Carterton. It is a relaxed group which has “reader’s choice” – thereby no pressure to read certain titles or genres. Reading ranges from thrillers through classics, biographies, non-fiction, Regency romances; really the whole gamut of literature is open – maybe not Mills and Boon! New members are welcome. Convenor: Sue Burns ph 379 6506 [email protected] Book Group Masterton The Masterton book group meets at REAP House on the second Monday of the month at 1:30 pm. Members report on the books they have read, a review is sent to the convener who sends these out in an email to all members. Reading is done by topic every second month with personal choice reading on the other month. Convenor: Catherine Graydon 027 255 4046 Book Group North-South This group meets on the fourth Monday of the month with the venue alternating between REAP House, Masterton and Roseneath Village Hall, Carterton. Our meetings are fairly informal and each month a topic or author is chosen and members read within that brief. Choosing a single book title for all members to read is rare. Topics may be genre related such as historical fiction, biography, suspense etc. Author studies may be a particular author or a specified area such as a New Zealand author, a prizewinning author etc. At each meeting books are reviewed and compared and our areas of reading and knowledge of books is greatly enhanced. We recognise that some members may not wish to read to a particular topic or may not have the time to read that month. They are still welcome to attend the meeting to join in the conversation or just to listen. Convenor: Jean Travers ph 027 332 4142 Email: [email protected] Creative Writing The sheer fun of writing fiction and learning to develop skills and then improve them, is the focus of this group. We meet on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at REAP House Masterton at 10am. Absolutely no experience is necessary but an interest in literature and writing creatively would help. Members select a new challenge each month, such as an idea, or using a technique, or a title, and then in the ensuing month write what is usually a short story. This is then read out to the group at the next meeting, who might want to discuss the work. The group is highly supportive. Members can use the group to get feedback on monthly progress of bigger ideas. Discussion can include interests of writing and literature. Convenor: Tim Bannatyne ph 377 7966 [email protected] Current Affairs South Wairarapa This group meets on the third Thursday of every month from 9.30 am to 11:30 am in the Roseneath Activities Hall in Carterton The objective is to discuss topics in the news at the local, national and international levels. Generally, a member will select and present one or two main topics and once those have been discussed, all attendees are invited to bring up a topic for discussion. RNZ is a very good source for topics (and other media, overseas or local) or newspapers reporting at all levels. For instance, RNZ podcasts may be played for all to hear using a cell phone and a Blue Tooth speaker. Discussion can then ensue at the end of the piece or when it is paused. Convenor: Paul Mallinson ph 021-109-4652 [email protected] |
Current Affairs Masterton REAP House, second Monday of the month, 10 AM. Convenor: Richard Jackson ph 027 811 0006 Film Group This group is for members interested in viewing a wide range of movies screening locally. Members are emailed details of forthcoming screenings. We believe that the prime raison d’etre of the Film Group is to encourage members to get together to discuss films they have seen, at the same time perhaps enjoying a meal or a coffee or glass of wine. Convenor: Margaret Baylis 022 650 1528 [email protected] French Conversation This group meets every Friday from 11am to 1pm usually at the Education Centre, 22 Dixon St, Masterton. We try to speak as much French as possible. So for the first hour we discuss our week or whatever else may spark our interest. Currently, we are using the series 'Coffee Break French'. This gives us much needed support in learning new vocabulary and phrases which we then feed back into our general conversation. To supplement this we listen to a podcast 'Learn French By Podcast', which we find quite informative. For an hour during the Friday meeting we are taught by Benedicte, a native French speaker. There is a small charge to cover her time and expenses. A few members meet for an extra burst of conversation every Wednesday afternoon for coffee. A feature of this group is that we help each other. We are at varying levels of experience so any problems with pronunciation or meaning are worked through together. So, if you'd like to learn a little more about our group please get in touch. Convenor: Brett Clark ph 027 363 4039 Email: [email protected] (September to December 2023 – pls contact Robyn O’Neill 021 1699415 or 06 3771802 Email: [email protected]) Italian Language and Culture The Italian group meets every Friday from 11 am to 1 pm mainly at the Education Centre, 22 Dixon Street, Masterton. Last year we saw not only a geographical exploration but also a very cosmopolitan range of cuisine: French, Turkish, Indian, Chinese and one time as far as Everest! Discussions are broad ranging, including the arts, education, politics, current affairs, and are laced with humour and good fun. We enjoy a variety of company as well as the venue and food origin so we welcome visitors either from U3A or beyond. Convenor: Sara Stewart ph: 06 370 2245 [email protected] |
Opera Appreciation Group The group meets monthly , in private homes. Prior to each session, an email is sent giving details of the venue. Also included is background opera information and a synopsis, which is designed to enhance the appreciation of the opera. Members bring their own lunch, which is eaten in a short break between Acts. The choice of operas covers an extensive range, with focus on , for example, composers, singers, or eras, ranging from very early opera to very modern opera. The operas are sourced from an extensive private collection of DVDs, and also from U-Tube. New members are most welcome. See "Groups at a Glance" for contact details. Philosophy On the 1st Thursday of the month we meet at REAP Masterton at 10am. Philosophy is such a wide ranging subject that members indicate, as a group, what topics they are interested in during the year. Each session’s topic is led by a member of the group who usually prepares some notes and help discussion. Leading a discussion is entirely voluntary. The topics might cover different philosophies, or philosophers or relevant issues of today with potential philosophical aspects. Discussion, discourse and humour are key elements of our meetings. Convenor: Tim Bannatyne ph 377 7966 [email protected] TED (Technology, Entertainment, and Design) Talks Many of you will have come across these before – there are thousands on-line. They are talks by a wide variety of people given in front of an audience, generally about 15 - 20 minutes long. In this group we meet at a member’s house, where we watch and discuss 2 or 3 talks per session. Each member of the group can take a turn to choose the talks so we get exposed a wide variety of topics. The discussions can wander off in any direction! We meet on the second Thursday of the month from 2pm to 4pm in Greytown. Convenor: Margaret Cole 06 304 8499 [email protected] Ukulele Currently our group comprises a few regular players, and we would dearly love to have more people join us. Previous experience is not necessary, just an enthusiasm for making music together. We meet every Friday at 10am in the Education Centre, 22 Dixon Street.
